Career Advice: Re-evaluating your Career

As part of my plans for next year’s re-launch, I’ve decided to start blogging more about career advice and motivation in general. I know there are so many intelligent people out there who are looking for support or insights on how to further their career, and often they are not able to find what they’re looking for, so here are some common questions on re-evaluating your career, answered:

I’m taking a step back in my career, how bad is it?

Guess what guys and girls, this is a question that you can only answer for yourselves! Being someone who’s actually done this though, here’s a bit of insight:

After working my way up the career ladder for 2 years, I decided the company and the (very niche) industry I was working in wasn’t for me. I decided I wanted to broaden my skill-set.

I looked for opportunities at my existing career level for 6 months without success. Was I being called up for interviews? Yes constantly! Was I getting through to second stages? All the time! Was I successful in landing the job? No! But why not, do you ask? The industry I worked in was very niche, and that meant most people did not quite understand what it was. I spent a long time trying to educate these people. By the time they were educated the answer was always ‘you have the right attitude, but you don’t have the skills we require for this level’.

So I did the only thing that I could, I re-evaluated my career, went back to the bottom of the career ladder, and started all over. Now, 3.5 years on from my decision I can safely say it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I was recently promoted to Organic Marketing Director, and couldn’t be more proud of the achievements I’ve made, especially for my age!

Does that mean this is the right path for everyone? No, certainly not! Does it mean that if you truly want change and you feel this is the only way, that you should go for it? Yes! As long as you’re not putting yourself in serious physical or financial harm, there is absolutely no reason for you not to go for it!

I’ve been doing the same job for a few years and I don’t feel challenged, what can I do?

This one is pretty simple, because there are just a few sub-questions you need to ask yourself here:

  • Why do I want to stay?
  • What do I like most about this job?
  • How would I feel if I left tomorrow?

If you’re answering all of the above with your work mates in mind but nothing else, it is 100% time to re-evaluate your career and move on. There is no reason for you to stay in a job, just so you can keep seeing your friends. Friends are important, but don’t be afraid to explore options that challenge you. If your friends are really your friends, they won’t go anywhere, and they will make the effort to see you when you’ve started your new job!

I work in an environment where speaking my mind is seen as a bad thing.

This is true for both men and women of course, but more often than not this can come down to sexism. I once got told that I was acting like a ‘diva’ at work, simply for speaking my mind about a campaign that I was running. I didn’t think anything of it when I was told this, but when I later discussed it with my friends they were appalled, and so they should be! The person in question here shall remain unnamed, as I don’t hold grudges, and this is simply an example of what can happen in some places. I’m certainly not saying this is the norm, or even that it happens everywhere, I simply think that when this happens, it’s time for you to re-evaluate your work situation, and take action.

Now some of the issues I’ve mentioned within this post are much bigger topics, and I’ll be looking to create more dedicated posts for these in the coming months, but for now, these are my tips to re-evaluating your career.
